Creating My Colours (Kyley Styles) Episode 8 - "My 34th Birthday Party"
Everything has always aligned perfectly on my birthday.
When I was 14, my mom and dad agreed to let me buy a used guitar amp from my friend Rob. It was a Squire, and for the first time I was really able to crank up the volume and put some distortion on my electric. I had so much fun that summer and that is literally the year most of my best riffs were invented.
The next year, my mom let me get a drum set!!! We went to Monster Music and it was my lucky year. For $500.00 we picked out a Westbury kit. This was also the year I saw Tea Party at the Coke Stage and I fell in love with live music. I remember having my mind blown during the Stampede that year watching this particular performance!
Now, after high school, I had the guitar, the amp, and the drum kit, so my next logical step was to join a band. Our first printed Satori Life CD, “Planet Music” which took 14 months to put together, was finally in my hands during this week in July of 2008, and the feelings of accomplishment for achieving the goal that we set out for were indescribable. Finally our tunes were out to the world.
In ‘09, that very tour, (which was documented on camera) was premiered for the first time. It was titled “ROCKAGANZA” which featured my band and 3 others rocking out on a tour through British Columbia. We all got together at Buds Bar in Invermere and watched it on the big screen on my birthday - July 9th 2009.
In 2013, my new band Blacksky Beach reached a peak during the Calgary Stampede when we rocked out with Buckcherry. We worked so frickin hard to deserve that opportunity - as fate would have it, this amazing gig happened 2 days before my 27th birthday.
My 2020 quarantine party was a culmination of more than a few months of hard work. I wasn’t sure what the vision for this web series would be at the beginning of March - but one step at a time, I am always just trying to improve every aspect - the look, the sound and the content. Episode 8 was my proudest to make so far.
Enjoy this tribute to my favorite day - which always falls right smack dab in the middle of the Calgary Stampede! (Well, any other year, anyways).
